Offered is a refurbished, very clean and cosmetically sharp, well-kept Garrett COIN HUNTER TR Discriminator metal detector. Unit is in great shape with full functionality in both all-metal and discriminate modes. Has a nice 7-inch, sensitive concentric coil for good depth, easy pinpointing, and fast target extraction/recovery.
I purchased this unit recently when it was not functioning and needed that infrequent, but eventually routine service and attention. In a labor of respect for a capable and classic machine, I replaced the battery tray for the four 9-volt operating batteries and two spare batteries– cleaned the dust and grim off the circuit board transistors, capacitors, switches, Op Amps, and control housing. Extracted the broken screw shaft stuck in the battery cover hold down guide.
Replaced 2 missing or cracked control knobs. Recalibrated the meter circuit. Found and installed a missing 7” coil. All the above cost me about 40 clams and several hours of my time. In other words, your looking at a heck of a machine that's going to give you 80% - 85% of the performance of the more modern and far more expensive, less reliable, in the long-run, surface-mount-technology - mostly digital processing gadgets being marketed today.
The results of the restoration effort and operational tests? See photos! Does it work at or near factory specs? Heck yeah! Recently field tested and it is functioning at or very near factory specifications in all modes and control functions/features.
I will not sell a metal detector that has issues or will not function as intended.  Not included in the offer, but shown for full disclosure, are two photos of my take after a 2-hour field test at a local school yard recreation field. This location was a tobacco plantation nursery spot in the late 1700s and a farm in the 1800s. I hunt this site a lot because of the regular injection of coinage and whatnot from students and sport players – but the sight has a sprinkling of colonial period and civil war period relics and occasional coin a few inches beneath the modern coins, pull-tabs, and bottlecaps. I did recover the expected modern-era coins and stuff -- but also a few of those deeper lurking keeper targets of the 19th century.
Garrett Electronics is a well-known and highly respected American-made brand. They’ve been making metal detectors for a long time - since like 1964. I’ve been enjoying the metal detecting/coin shooting hobby for over 40 years now - most of that in the past 20 years. As a teen, my second metal detector was a Garrett TR Discriminator – thus my interest in restoring this one as this model was always and exceptional and reliable performer for me at most any possibly productive site I would take it to. Many of my first pre-1900 coins were
found
with this model.
I acquire, restore, and still use several of these vintage metal detectors as the underlying solid-state technology gives solid, reliable performance on coin-size targets and relics down to 7 inches – deeper for targets larger than the average coin size item. I have found numerous keeper coins and relics with this model. The newer (and quite more expensive) detectors will detect coins to the 8 – 10 inch levels, but my experience is that most (like in 90% or more) truly retrievable coin/jewelry/relic targets are within the 5 to 7 inch range from near surface. I’m not much interested in digging too much deeper than that as each inch deeper requires much more time, effort, and detector accessories to retrieve.
This Garrett COIN HUNTER is a discriminating metal detector with solid-state analog and digital processing circuit components. It was very popular before the newer, mostly digitally and software processed gadgets on the retail market now. It uses an inductively balanced transmit and receive coil and analog detection/processing circuit (thus the “TR” designation) to provide pleasing stability, more than adequate sensitivity/depth, and pleasant analog audio target indication tones. It has sensitivity, tuning, volume, discrimination, and mineralization compensation features. The button on the handle tip is for instant retuning to original sensitivity setting if you tweak the controls or experience the infrequent, but occasional tuning “drift” as ground conditions change during your hunt session.
The unit pictured and included accessories (6-inch Garrett trowel digger, for tough vegetation and roots - a plug/root cutting knife, Garrett target probe, and extracted target keeper bag) are the exact items you will receive. Detector aside, the included accessories are fair value of approx. 24 clams. So look at my asking prices (starting and buy-now option) and the "all things considered" package offering -- and see that I'm giving everyone interested a real value play here.
Not pictured in this listing, but I will also include the easy to use and understand operating instruction manual. Not at all complicated once you are familiar with the unit’s 4 knobs and mode switch. For the most part, it is a “turn-on” and go machine with minimal adjustments once you get going.
For the condition, performance, and investment value offered, a relatively low
